The Austin Bailey Foundation and Unity in Diversity Communication, Cooperation and Inspiration

Joanne Ng and Jayden Joo put the finishing touches to the new Unity in Diversity website and Facebook page

Charities always start with good intentions, but good intentions don’t always yield positive outcomes. It’s refreshing and uplifting to work with an organisation whose good intentions are backed up by decision-making and commitment that improves lives in precisely the ways they’ve always intended.

Founded in 1984 by Keith Bailey, the Austin Bailey Foundation has an impressive track record of supporting Swansea churches and charities with transformative grant funding. Over the past year, the beneficiaries have included the service users of Unity in Diversity, and Chair of Trustees Adella Pritchard is confident that the impact will be long-lasting:

“Austin Bailey provided us with funding to pay volunteer expenses. Our volunteers are remarkable people; they offer their time and skills to help others become a part of their community. By reimbursing their travel expenses we’ve secured their long-term support, sparked their imagination and made them want to do more.”

When a group of volunteers approached the UiD Trustee Board with a plan to help them give Swansea’s asylum seekers and refugees a platform to make their voices heard, Adella recognised a golden opportunity:

“Our volunteers, led by Joanne Ng and Jayden Son, presented a plan to develop a website from scratch. They didn’t want payment for this work, and when I realised that the expenses incurred setting up the site were almost exactly equal to the amount of funding we had remaining from the Austin Bailey grant, it was an easy decision to allocate the money to this project.”

Work on the website and a new Facebook page has coincided with the launch of a range of UiD services that are spreading a positive, inclusive message throughout Swansea, reaching out to service users at community venues in all parts of the city.

Jayden has pinpointed a suitable week for a celebratory website launch:

“We’re timing the launch of the website to celebrate World Family Day. The theme for 2026 is “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing”. We believe passionately in helping families find security and happiness, eliminating inequalities and giving children the healthy, positive start in life that everyone deserves. Our friends at the Austin Bailey Foundation stand with us in this mission. We’re delighted to thank them for their support and celebrate this new chapter for Unity in Diversity and for Swansea.”

Joanne is happy to share the success stories that are improving lives every day:

“2026 is an exciting year for Unity in Diversity, and the website tells the story of the year, project by project. Our community ambassadors are reaching out to all parts of Swansea, our green projects are introducing people to the satisfaction of caring for the environment and our education and training projects are building a bridge to citizenship and employment. Our volunteers and service users love this city. They love this country. They are making a valuable contribution and it’s our pleasure to share that.”

The Austin Bailey Foundation has a distinguished record of support for agencies dedicated to the relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. Its Bridging the Gap project is removing barriers to education and employment, delivering opportunities to young people in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot. And its support for Unity in Diversity is directly helping asylum seekers and refugees who’ve come to South Wales in search of such opportunities. We will always be thankful for that.
