Building the Bridge

Talented people deserve an outlet for their skills, and UiD service users are very talented indeed. The people who walk through our door and ask for support in building a new life in Wales are eager to make a contribution. They’re eager to work.

In 2022, Swansea University lecturer and Unity in Diversity Trustee Jill Boggs set up an employability workshop designed to help them work towards that goal. Jill applied successfully for funding and structured a workshop that achieved an excellent balance of building up the confidence of service users while challenging them to deal with important real-world situations.

As a senior lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the School of Culture and Communication, Jill understands the value of presentational skills, and the challenge of showing those skills in a second language. The workshop gave service users an object lesson in CV preparation, the job application process and the crucial skill of showing prospective employers the best of ourselves when it matters most.

The economy jobseekers faced in 2022 was a challenging one, and in recent years the job market has, if anything, become even more competitive. Over the coming months Unity in Diversity will run more employability workshops and seek to build a bridge to employment for the many people who come to us with skills and commitment that we find thoroughly admirable. They deserve a future. They deserve a job,.We can help. If you’d like to know more, contact us at unitydiversity@gmail.com.
