This Friday, May 15th, marks the anniversary of the founding of the city of Las Vegas and the opening of the first-ever McDonald’s restaurant. If those events, in 1905 and 1940, saw the birth of something unmistakably American, there’s another anniversary on the same day that belongs to the entire world.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution marking the 15th of May as a date to be celebrated each year as the International Day of Families. It’s a celebration that goes to the heart of Unity in Diversity’s mission. When parents cross oceans and borders to keep their children safe and give them a chance of happiness and fulfilment, they are doing what comes naturally. They are doing what all parents should do. Last week, every corner of Wales, plus the whole of Scotland and 136 English local authorities took part in local elections. Many voters asked a familiar question in the run-
up to those elections, wanting reassurances for the next generation.
What will you do for our children?
It’s a universal question, and one that reminds us of the similarities that bind us together, not the manufactured divisions that sometimes drive a wedge between us. This Friday is a day to promote awareness of the issues that affect all families, whatever their background.
Eleven years ago, the United Nations adopted a set of sustainable development goals, intending to eradicate poverty and discrimination, and address the threat to the environment. A review of the world we live in today suggests we have a lot of work to do to meet those lofty goals. This year’s International Day of Families has the theme “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing”. Parents who work as hard as they can and still struggle to provide for their children deserve answers to their questions. Children who grow up in disadvantaged circumstances often lose ground that can never be made up.
Our message to Wales’s families today is simple. Wherever you were born, whatever comforts you were born with or without, and whatever led you to this place at this time, we believe you and your children have rights. You have the right to education, healthcare, a sense of belonging and a sense of security. Look into the eyes of your neighbours and you’ll see people who have the same hopes and ambitions for their loved ones that you do. You’ll see people who are asking the same question you’re asking of this country’s leaders.
What will you do for our children?
Unity in Diversity projects are bringing people together in all parts of Swansea. We’re finding that when people share a love of family and community, differences can seem trivial and barriers can be taken down.
We are family.
