The Reasons Why

Unity in Diversity exists to help Swansea-based asylum seekers and refugees integrate into and contribute to their communities. The charity exists to support our friends as they navigate the UK immigration system and seek happy, productive lives for themselves and their families.

We can’t do it alone, and in 2026 we’ve been indebted to Community Foundation Wales for the support and funding that’s helped us breathe life into a flagship project. Since 1999, this organisation has been on a mission to strengthen Welsh communities, bring people together and change lives for the better.

The Home Office recommends that people seeking leave to remain in the UK should take the SELT B1 exam as evidence of their English language proficiency. In 2026 UiD has delivered free tuition to our community members with a focus on this exam. Thanks to Community Foundation Wales, we were able to pay the exam fees for nine students. Thanks to the dedication and aptitude of these nine students, every one of them passed.

At a commemorative event on July 30th, we presented certificates to the successful students. Unity in Diversity trustee Mohamad Zakaria made the presentations, and he spoke for all of us when he described these nine people as the pride of our city.

This education project will continue and we’ll keep getting positive results, because when UiD receives grant funding, we use it for the benefit of our community members and their communities.  

If our successful students are the pride of our city, then Community Foundation Wales is the pride of our country. Over the past 27 years, Community Foundation Wales has awarded over £40 million in grants to charities and community groups. They’ve been making our country better for over a quarter of a century. In 2026 they made the difference for Unity in Diversity, not only because they awarded us a grant but because they understand what we’re here for. They understand the reasons why.
